Patient Health Questionnaire-9, is a clinically validated screening tool that helps to identify the presence and severity of depression. It consists of 9 questions that are directly related to the diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The questionnaire asks about the frequency of symptoms experienced over the past two weeks, such as feeling down, having trouble sleeping, experiencing little interest or pleasure in doing things, and having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, among others.

For individuals feeling stuck and lost, which are common descriptions of how people might feel when dealing with depression or other mental health issues, the PHQ-9 can provide a starting point for understanding their emotional state. It gives a "name" to what they're experiencing by identifying symptoms that are associated with depression. Recognizing these symptoms can be the first step toward seeking help and finding appropriate treatment or support.

If you or someone you know is feeling stuck and lost, and especially if the PHQ-9 indicates the presence of depressive symptoms, it's important to seek professional help.
